Goal: Investigate innovative uses of immersive environments in mechanical and materials engineering

Uniqueness & Innovation: We have used immersive environments for ergonomic and styling evaluations of automative interiors and have developed several supporting applications/technologies along the way. In addition, we are using virtual environments for materials visualizations.

Virtual Reality System (VRS)

A Virtual Prototyping System has been created as an engineering tool for ergonomic and styling evaluations of automotive interiors and exteriors. This system incorporates a two way link with the CAD system and a fully scalable, parametric human model.

3D Visualization of Grain Structures & Dislocations in Materials

The purpose of this project was to develop an interactive immersive environment using OpenGL and Virtual Reality technology to visualize the grain structures and dislocations in materials


We have worked on the integrated use of simulation tools in real time for participatory occupational ergonomic studies. This facilitates integration of ergonomic issues early in the design and planning stages for products and for workplace layouts. 

3D Menus in Immersive Environments

A 3D menu, also called a virtual menu, adds functionality and allows interactions that are usually difficult to specify through direct interaction with the object in the vurtual environment.


Prototype Human Model

We created a human model that allows the user to use a combination of immersive and non-immersive techniques for ergonomic evaluations.

Automated Calibration System

A real-time integrated calibration system for virtual reality environments has been developed that enables accurate electromagnetic tracking of user motions for virtual reality applications. A software called COVE has been developed.

Algorithms For Real-Time Calibration

Tracking systems are an important part of most immersive virtual reality systems. Engineering applications requiring a high degree of accuracy include virtual prototyping, virtual manufacturing, and virtual assembly. We report on some algorithms to perform real-time calibration.
