Ontologies for Engineering Design

Goal: Investigate the use of ontology in providing an adaptive capability to create, share, and exchange data for solving design evaluation challenges related to composition, viewpoint, and deployment diversity in large-scale automobile manufacturing and then generalize this solution.

Uniqueness & Innovation: This approach is based on building concepts into ontologies for each domain and interfacing actual data and ontologies. Users working in different areas can use concepts and terminologies within their own expertise to describe the design semantics. Design semantics can be translated and exchanged.

Featured Projects

Knowledge Representation

We explicitly build into ontologies the engineering product data knowledge which is used in different design and analysis processes. We have created a three-tier representation of concepts in engineering ontologies related to product data - General Domain ontology (GDO), Domain Specific Ontology (DSO), and Application Spscific Ontology (ASO). In parallel, semantics and knowledge can be considered at two levels: Concept level and instance level.

Ontology Mapping Application

We have created an ontology mapping application (OMA) that enables us to translate semantic information betwen domain specific ontologies. The OMA is based on a shared ontology approach, rule based mapping strategies, and a bridge ontology that help us to automatically interpret knowledge representation and diminish the barrier to interoperability.

Semantic Applications Enabling Reasoning in Product Assembly Ontologies - Moving Past Modeling

In this project we postulate an approach to introduce reasoning capabilities into ontologies in the product assembly domain in order to truly exploit these logic-based and formal representations for product data.

Semantic integration and Interoperability of CAD/CAE applications based on ontology modeling: strategies and comparisons

This project builds upon preliminary ontology research conducted at Washington State University and contains a deeper discussion about potential strategies for integrating product data semantics between CAD and CAE applications based on their ontology models. Details are given for the ontology modeling process for the product engineering domain as well as a literal process for utilizing these ontology models to realize the integration of multiple CAD/CAE applications.

Building a semantic online community to support engineering knowledge retention and exchange in the product assembly domain

We present an approach to build a semantic online community to facilitate activities of an engineering knowledge lifecycle in a coordinated manner. We call this community CREEK (Community for Retention and Exchange of Engineering Knowledge). In this project, the online community is specifically focused on the domain of procedural knowledge related to engineering product assembly and the target audience is a spectrum of engineers ranging from experts to newer and relatively inexperienced engineers

Online Semantic Knowledge Management for Product Design Based on Product Engineering Ontologies

This project seeks to formulate an approach to use the semantic web for knowledge management in the product design domain in order to provide enhanced capabilities of authoring/updating, querying/reasoning, searching, and visualization of information.

A unified strategy to integrate information and methods across multiple training environments for assembly simulations

In this project, we focus on an integrated approch with support from ontologies to develop methods which enable knowledge to be used and shared in a comprehensive and effective manner between CBT and IMT tools.
